The story then shows us what the world is like the day after the erosion of the artificial gehenna gate with people suddenly seeing demons everywhere. Rin says he’s the worst, and he replies “Of course I am, I’m a demon. However, you should recognize the past.” Mephisto states that his nature is to give to those who don’t want anything without giving to those who do want something. “The truth that Okumura-sensei should recognize is unfortunately not the past or anything like that. Mephisto says that humans by nature look away from the truth, and that if Rin wants to move forward, he has to recognize the truth for what it is. Mephisto replies that he attempted to many times, and when Rin looks confused, Mephisto tells him to ignore that. Rin replies that he is, that he never wanted to know and that he’d rather Mephisto tell Yukio this than him. Mephisto then hides Rin’s heart for him since Rin is still unable to do it himself, and then tells him that any door will do.Īs Rin is preparing to go, Mephisto asks him if he’s scared. He then outfits Rin in a special patrol duty uniform, saying that it would camouflage him just like the ponchos did. Mephisto tells Rin that he must go alone to the past by using the “Spirited Away Key” from his father, and that it’ll lead him to any door…including a door to the past.
He then says that it’s his fault for not reading the other side’s tactics, and that he must deal with the situation. Mephisto tells Rin to look around, and says that this is a world with the false Gehenna gate open.
